Varun Bahl for #ICW2017:
Today, designer Varun Bahl looks to the Art Nouveau period for inspiration at the latest edition of India Couture Week 2017 with his collection ‘Dream Nouveau‘. The designer is known for his global and discerning approach towards traditional Indian-wear since 2001. Moreover, this time he took inspiration from the Art Nouveau period to create a series of vintage floral stories at the Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi. In attendance were the crème de la crème of fashion such as Rohit Bal, JJ Valaya, Manish Malhotra, Pernia Qureshi and Kalyani Chawla along with industry giants such as Ajay Bijli of PVR Cinemas.
Inspired by Chezh Art Nouveau painter and artist Alphonse Mucha’s masterpieces like the Le Pater (1889), The Seasons (1896), and The Flowers (1898) – the collection showcased traits of the artists’ traditional bohemian influence and neo classical motifs. Also, the range plays with curvy linear patterns, asymmetrical lines, and floral and plant motifs.
“Through this collection, we, have tried to recreate a magical sequence of designs. Now, Art Nouveau is the inspiration; so, we have tried to enhance the artistic elements with ornamentation and silhouettes with classic cuts. Lastly, every design is created by blending poetry and fantasy to transport the audience to a dreamy atmosphere,” said Varun.
Color & Cuts:
The colour palette saw an eclectic mix of ivory, pale pink, peach, burnt orange, pistachio, red, and old rose. Also, the runway showcased an assortment of lehengas, jacket Anarkali, saris and a mix of tailored couture pieces. Now, the magnificence of Art Nouveau motifs was seen on fabrics like silk, tulle, and georgette. It was a true visual feast.
